Trump Leaves Populism In The Dust

Writer for THE WEEK, Scott Galupo, recently wrote a bold statement that the recent legislation passed by congress on tax reform does absolutely nothing to accomplish the many promises from Trump’s campaign. The working and middle class have not and will not receive breaks just by clamping down on the wealthy and the big banks.

Here is the majority of what he said,

Conservatives inclined to cheer major tax-cut legislation even if it’s signed by a president they don’t particularly care for are frustrated by its unpopularity. They blame the media and Democrats for torquing up class warfare. In effect, they ask, don’t you know you’ll get a tax cut, too?!

Here is an alternative explanation: Working- and middle-class voters don’t much care that they might get a (temporary) tax cut. The problem is, when they hear Republicans touting the magic of cuts, they smell a rat. They’ve been hearing the same rhetoric for 40 years, and they know the fix is in. They suspect that the wealthiest Americans stand to gain the most — and they would be right.

It didn’t have to be this way.

In fact, Donald Trump, the candidate, promised the country a different way, a different kind of Republicanism; he promised a kind of radical-center populism. Candidate Trump entertained the idea of raising taxes on the wealthy, including himself. As late as this past September, he signaled a commitment to eliminating the carried-interest loophole for hedge fund and private equity managers. As late as this past March, there was still talk of breaking up the big banks and reinstating Glass-Steagall legislation. He says he still wants an infrastructure bill — but the deficits caused by these tax cuts (estimates vary from $500 billion to $1 trillion over the next 10 years, depending on how much growth they stimulate and, conversely, how much easier it becomes to game the tax code) will make it hard to find money for new spending.

President Trump could’ve turned Washington, D.C., on its head. The conventional wisdom about the grand bargain between Trump and the Republican establishment is that they will tolerate his antics and flagrant corruption in exchange for his signing their agenda into law. But Trump could’ve struck an entirely different bargain than the one he’s wedded to now — the one that has him and his congressional allies both mired in approval ratings that are astonishingly low given economic conditions.

    BS!

  • Stephen Howe

I am SO TIRED of reading these $oros-funded, “give up all hope pro-Trumpers, your leader has abandoned you” op-ed blurbs. Trump has done more to keep his campaign promises than ANY OTHER President I can recall in my lifetime. Moreover, he has managed to do this SINGLE-HANDEDLY, incessantly fighting not just the Demwits (who swore that they would refuse to support ANY Trump in any way), and the RABIDLY LEFTIST mainstream media, but most members of his OWN PARTY of fatcat, mealy-mouthed RINOs. Yes, Trump could have “Turned DC on its ear” if he had ANY support from the GOP in Congress. Trump’s approval ratings are low because they are generated by the media, and the same folks that forecast Hillary’s leading BY DOUBLE-DIGITS IN EVERY STATE on Election Night!

Trump is America’s LAST HOPE to restore the rule of Constitutional Law & Bill of Rights to this nation. Can you imagine if all the millions of Americans who HATED Obama had donned masks (or hoods) and rioted, burning cars? If late night talkshow hosts had encouraged Obama’s assassination?! If media outlets had disparaged Obama’s tranny “wife” or those two, smart-ass “rent-a-kids” who pretended to be his offspring (despite the lack…once again…of any actual “berf” certificates)?

      Right on, Stephen! Well said!

      Boy are you stupid

      • John Savell

Stephen Howe is not stupid. He is right on with his assessment. I see you insult him, but you offer no counter argument, nor evidence pointing out where he is wrong. It is easy to insult someone with whom you disagree, in fact the left has perfected that, but to actually make coherent arguments detailing why that someone is wrong is a completely different story, and that is something the left has not figured out. If you have something intelligent add, but all means join the discussion, but if as I suspect, you have nothing intelligent to add, why don’t you sit back and read some of the comments and maybe you will learn something.

In fact, this article is fundamentally stupid as is the comment below by voncile. Both demonstrate no understanding of either the current situation or how our dysfunctional tax system works. See Dr. David Kamerschen’s “The Tax System Explained in Beer” for a clue. As in his post script, “For those who understand,
no explanation is needed. For those who do not understand, no explanation is possible.” What troubles me is that, no one, Dem or Rep, discusses or even mentions the real 800 lb gorilla in the room, currency debasement. Consider that they have essentially stolen 95 cents out of every dollar you have in terms of purchasing power since 1971. All the talk about taxes, tax reform etc. is quibbling about how much they take of the nickel you have left. Make no mistake, currency debasement has put the US in an economic death spiral. Our only choices are a crash landing with the flaps out and gear down or to just auger in full speed. No nation in recorded history has had a different outcome with a fiat currency.

          • John Savell

“The Tax System Explained in Beer” is that the one where he talks about the rich one paying something like 90% of the tab for 10 people, and when the bartender decides to give them so many free beers, the bottom 4 or 5 feel like they should get paid to drink, or something to that affect?
And I agree with you whole-heartedly.

          • sasquatch1313

Obviously you are among those for whom, no explanation is needed. Good show.

I have been reduced the lower middle class thanks to the Obomination and gov Brown.
I see the tax reductions as real but want them increased and made permanent.
